The reason I like this photo is pretty obvious. The whole
asymmetrical format of the photo is what drew me to it. Everything the girls
are wearing is the exact same. This goes for the hair and the way they stand
and hold themselves. However the difference in facial expression is quite
obvious and that’s what I love about the picture. One could see this photo as
two different emotions, or two different themes such as love and hate or yin
and yang. Again Dianne Arbus uses the black and white to focus on the subjects
more.

There are many elements I find compelling about this photo. First
of all I like how in her photo’s, Dianne Arbus uses a black and white filter. I
feel this brings the photograph and subject in the photo to its most raw form. I
also appreciate the frame around the woman’s head. Her scarf and hair provide
an even oval shape around her head drawing focus to her facial expression.

With this photo I think the use of black and white makes
this photo more interesting than in color. What I appreciate about this photo
composition is that the black and white add more life to the subject. The light
on the woman’s face makes her seem more alive and youthful. This contrasts with
her old age and rather darker clothing. I think this was what Imogene
Cunningham was trying to capture with this photo.
